Alison Bowman, Art and Design
It's no surprise to find Alison Bowman with her nose stuck in a drawing pad. Although she has extensive experience in accounting, strategic and financial planning, and various other business positions, Bowman's true love lies in designing people-centered spaces. Gaining solid technical training through UC Berkeley Extension's Certificate Program in Interior Design and Interior Architecture, Bowman is turning her passion for drawing into a successful career.
"What I like about Extension is it is designed for working professionals," Bowman says, who is in the process of winding down her strategy-consulting firm while she makes the transition into her new design career. "It's a postgraduate program attached to an amazing academic institution. So you already have to have a college degree, and it's taught by working professionals in the field. Those things really distinguish the program."
Graduating in May 2012, Bowman is in the process of putting together her portfolio and seeking a mentor relationship with professionals in the design, architecture and design-build fields. "I would like to integrate all three of those fields into one firm that is design-led, which isn't done often," she says of her future plans. And she's bringing her fellow classmates into that dream: Bowman looks forward to opening up a firm with a couple of them someday. "It's really been a wonderful experience, and I've realized that I have a great set of skills that will help me in this field."
