UC Berkeley Extension students come from a variety of backgrounds and fields, and Jesse Han is no exception. Although he has a degree in Asian American Studies, Han's real career desire is to work as a dentist. And now that he's completed the courses needed for dental school, as part of the Post-Baccalaureate Health Professions Program, Han is on track to start applying.

Beyond the coursework, Han has an additional advantage over other applicants, thanks to Extension. "I was fortunate to join a student group of fellow classmates who traveled to Honduras," Han says. "We went to rural communities to address some of their medical and dental needs. This trip solidified many of our ambitions and goals to pursue careers in the health professions."

Still on his journey toward dentistry, Han is preparing for graduate school application requirements—including academic letters of recommendation, which many of his instructors are more than happy to pen. "The instructors are experts in their fields and great lecturers," he says. "They put forth tons of time and energy to make sure the students really understand the subject material. They are accessible both in and outside of class, and there are many with whom I still keep touch."
