Lauren Schiff photoLauren Schiff, Sciences, Biotechnology and Mathematics

With her eyes toward medical school, Lauren Schiff knows that her education at UC Berkeley Extension gives her a competitive edge when applying to medical school. She already has a B.S. from the University of Michigan and an M.S. in reproductive health and human genetics at University of Sydney. Not wanting to spend five years completing a Ph.D. and then four years at medical school, Schiff enjoys the fast pace of Extension's Post-Baccalaureate Health Professions Program.

"I knew that Extension was the only institution that offered a solid post-baccalaureate where I would be on an equal playing field compared to other medical school candidates," Schiff says. "You also get access to the same labs that UC Berkeley's premed students use, which enticed me to the program."

Schiff is quick to point out that it's not only about the education but also the instructors and fellow classmates who provide a collaborative learning environment. Each instructor encourages her to learn, and the students work together because they are all striving toward the same goal: to get into an advanced medical program. "If you're committed to becoming a doctor or dentist or veterinarian and you're 110 percent sure, UC Berkeley Extension offers you an experience that will give you the tools to be a competitive applicant," she says. "Extension opens the door for you; you just have to walk through it."
