Robina Do Carmo, Education
Robina Omelagah Do Carmo plans to divide her time between Brazil, the United States and Portugal once her husband retires—and use her recent education in teaching English as a second language to facilitate the transition. After 18 years as a human resources professional with Chevron, Do Carmo is able to combine her empathy for people who have to learn a secondary language with her interest in language acquisition in UC Berkeley Extension’s Certificate Program in Teaching English as a Second Language. Commuting from Tracy, Calif., to Extension’s Berkeley, San Francisco and Belmont centers, she is a graduate of the certificate in just three terms!
Out of school for 28 years, Do Carmo knows how difficult it can be to get back into learning mode, an asset she is sure to take with her beyond Extension. "I'm focusing on teaching in Portugal and coaching business people in Brazil," she explains. "I did my student teaching this summer, with 24 students from 17 countries. I'm very energized by getting all these people to speak English, because when they go home, they're not speaking English."
Do Carmo is currently putting together a curriculum to implement in Brazil and credits Extension's instructors with preparing her well for this new journey. "Whether you're career changing or lifelong learning, you never know what the future is going to be," she says. "And it's always good to have new skills for the next chapter in life."
