Principles of Sustainable Design

A requirement in the Professional Program in Sustainable Design and fulfills the Current Issues course requirement in the Certificate Program in Interior Design and Interior ArchitectureThis is the core introductory course for the Professional Program in Sustainable Design. It begins with an examination of the history and development of sustainability as a social goal, and explores its implications for the design of built environments. Concepts studied include biophilia, permaculture, localism, life-cycle analysis, biomimicry, natural capitalism, cradle-to-cradle, unfolding wholeness, and ecological design. The latest tools, techniques, and materials will be explored as will government programs, legislation, industry regulations and codes, green certifications, LEED, and nonprofit organizations involved with sustainability.

JESSICA CAREW KRAFT, M.A., M.Res., LEED AP, is a writer, designer and educator focusing on sustainable lifestyle change. An anthropologist and artist, she has written for several contemporary art and lifestyle magazines and worked with architects and city planners on sustainable development projects in San Francisco, New York, London, the Middle East, and Latin America.
