Clinical Trials: Phases and Design

A required course in the Professional Program in Clinical Research Conduct and ManagementDesigned for individuals working or interested in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, this course reviews all steps involved in the drug discovery and development process, including nonclinical, clinical, and post-marketing studies. After reviewing the entire process, the course focuses on clinical trial design. A clinical trial, by definition, is a carefully planned and scientifically sound experiment. The instructor lists and describes the various trial design elements necessary for trial and marketing success and discusses their usage in and suitability for particular phases, indications, and types of clinical studies.
Prerequisite: Module A: Introduction to Clinical Research.

RAFAEL ESCANDON, Ph.D., MPH, is senior director of clinical operations at Cytokinetics, Inc., a South San Francisco bio-pharmaceutical company at which he develops therapies for oncology and cardiovascular disease. Escandon received his education and training at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, the Johns Hopkins University Hospitals and JHU Bloomberg School of Public Health.
