Exploring the Portrait and Self-Portrait
X434 (2 semester units in Art)
Artists have long used the portrait as a way to expand the language of drawing, to respond to the social world around them, or to look into their own souls. In this course, you explore the expressive use of line, the dramatic values of light and shadow, and the basics of human anatomy in weekly homework assignments and by drawing models in class. Slide-illustrated lectures present portraits and self-portraits using mood, memory, photography, abstraction, and fantasy as expressive tools.
Note: Bring an 18" x 24" newsprint pad, an 18" x 24" drawing pad, pencils, and charcoal to the first class.
