Introduction to American Politics

Explore the theoretical implications of democracy and justice in this in-depth look at the structure of the American political system. This course analyzes the basic workings of the Constitution and the institutions of the federal government, including Congress, the presidency, the bureaucracy, and the judiciary. Examine the system of electoral politics, including parties, interest groups, social movements, public opinion, and participation, as well as several areas of public policy: defense, foreign policy, civil rights and liberties, social spending, welfare reform, and the economy.

NINA CLARK, Ph.D., earned her doctorate in political science from the USC. Her dissertation, "The Politics of Self-Deliverance," addressed physician-assisted suicide from the perspective of the elderly population and was published by Garland Publishing in 1997. She has taught in and has run the Women's Studies Program at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Conn.
