General Chemistry I
X19A (3 semester units in Chemistry)
This course introduces fundamental concepts of inorganic chemistry, including matter, atoms, molecules, solutions, thermochemistry, chemical bonding, and intermolecular forces. General Chemistry is designed for biology, pre-medical, and pre-health students. It is also appropriate for returning students interested in chemistry and professionals in other disciplines considering a career change to the sciences. It is associated with Chemistry Laboratory I (X19.1A). The lecture portion of the course may be taken without the laboratory.
Prerequisites: Algebra; high school chemistry is recommended

JOSHUA PATIN, Ph.D., is a senior scientist with Schafer Corporation in Sunol. He has been involved with chemistry for almost 20 years. His interest in chemistry has led him to the discovery of new elements and he now looks forward to teaching.

SAMUEL GILLETTE, Ph.D., has taught general and organic chemistry classes at UC Berkeley and UC San Diego. He has more than 10 years of experience working as a chemist in both biotech and biopharmaceuticals. His interest in chemistry has led him to discover new biologically active compounds in several therapeutic areas.Revised class schedule in red.
