Survey of Genre Fiction
X439 (2 semester units in English)
An elective in the Post-Baccalaureate Certificate Program in WritingThis course provides a tour of representative texts in commercial contemporary fiction—fantasy, science fiction, horror, romantic suspense and mystery—from the perspective of readers who are, or are thinking of writing genre fiction. One analytical focus is practical—an examination of craft and conventions; the second is more abstract, a consideration of literary impact, and the high and low cultural context. Together, we'll compile a field guide to definitive aspects of each genre.
