An elective in the Professional Program in Aging and Mental Health and in the Professional Program in the Treatment of Mood DisordersLearn to recognize signs of depression in the elderly, (i.e. cognitive versus emotional versus neurovegetative signs) and differentiate them from signs of dementia in this workshop. Examine the criteria for diagnosis of dementia as well as the varying courses of disease progression (e.g. depression heralding dementia, depression co-morbid with dementia, depression as a consequence of having dementia). Then learn to analyze the prevalence rate of depression across different types of dementia, investigate psychiatric and neuropsychological correlates that differentiate pseudodementia from dementia, and learn how they can be extrapolated from clinical interview and cognitive testing results.
