The Art and Times of Goya
X409.5 (1 semester unit in Art History)
In the opening decades of the nineteenth century, Spanish art was dominated by Francisco José Goya y Lucientes, an artist whose work is of such quality and range that the critic Robert Hughes called him "the first Modernist and the last Old Master." Trace the evolution of Goya's unique painterly and graphic artistic style from Rococo lightness into the moody darkness of his bold expressive late works and investigate the complex political and cultural influences on the life and art of this great master.
