The Informed Photographer
X101.1 (2 semester units in Architecture)
Develop a personal photographic vision informed by the past history of photography through in-depth studies of important photographs, ranging in time from historical to contemporary. Subject, stylistic choices, the intention of the photographers, the photographer’s own words, the context of the time in which the photograph was taken, and the influences of art movements are all considered. Weekly assignments mirror the ideas and intentions of the photograph studied to reveal the relationship between subject, style, and intent; develop personal ideas; and examine your own formal choices when shooting and printing. Any camera format is possible. Color or black-and-white digital prints are acceptable for assignments.
