Understanding the Graphic Novel
X458 (1 semester unit in English)
Graphic novels are comic books that use both visual and verbal art to create complex, sustained narratives. In this course we read, analyze, and discuss a variety of graphic novels from different sub-genres within the form: autobiography, social and political reportage, fantasy/science fiction, and intersections between all of the above. Although not a course specifically on how to write and draw the graphic novel, understanding the graphic novel as a reader is a necessary first step towards creating them.
