Introduction to Relational Database Management Systems

A requirement in the Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Information Systems and Management and a requirement in the Professional Sequence in Database Management

Learn effective relational database design and gain a general overview of relational database management systems. This class introduces students to the terminology and methods used to create and modify Database Management Systems (DBMS). Emphasis is given to accessing large databases and developing methods for working with data on different DBMS. The course concentrates on helping students gain confidence in using DBMS and understanding data structures.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to explain the fundamental architecture of existing database management systems, including data storage techniques of the relational database model. They will be able to use Query-By-Example (QBE) and SQL to formulate basic database queries and transform business requirements into logical and physical database designs using the Normalization Process.

Prerequisite: A previous programming course in any language or equivalent experience is recommended.
