The new technology of synchronized sound revolutionized the art of cinema in 1926. Trace the beginnings of sound cinema with a look at early Vitagraph Sound films and excerpts from the classic film
The Jazz Singer with Al Jolson. Then view the works of film directors who explored unique uses of sound—Von Sternberg, Reifenstahl, Chaplin, Welles, Rossellini, Truffaut, and Polanski—and investigate the ways that various sound filmic styles were developed and employed to catalyze the evolution of modern cinema.

DOMINIC ANGERAME, M.F.A., director of Canyon Cinema, is an independent filmmaker whose more than 35 films have won awards in numerous film festivals and been featured at the Whitney Biennial (2006) . He has been nominated for a Rockefeller Foundation Grant, participated in an exhibition held at the Foundation Cartier in Paris, and had a retrospective at the Havana Film Festival in 2006.NOTE: This class is closed.
