Assessment and Treatment of Men in Psychotherapy: Perilous Pitfalls and Effective Intervention Strategies

Understand the challenges inherent in providing psychotherapy to men and study a range of effective clinical strategies. You learn approaches to engaging resistant men in therapy and review traditional and non-traditional manifestations of depression, including addictive behaviors such as substance abuse and the use of Internet pornography. You cover clinical interventions to prevent and treat violence and examine the comparative advantages of individual, couple, and group therapies including 12-step, men's groups, and mixed gender groups. You view each topic in the context of treating men from diverse socioeconomic and racial/cultural backgrounds and examine the impact of the ongoing recession on men in the workforce.

JEFF SHARP, Ph.D., is a licensed psychologist with a private practice in Oakland. He has taught at graduate schools throughout the Bay Area and supervised interns at several community clinics. He has been involved in various forms of men's work for 30 years.
