NEW THIS TERM
Rome and Germany in the Year 9
Travel back 2,000 years to the year 9 A.D., when the Roman Empire suffered a crushing defeat by German forces under the command of Arminius. Explore the short- and long-term effects of this defeat on the Roman Empire and on Europe as a whole. Readings—in English—explore the Roman interpretation of the battle (Who was to blame? Was the loss irreparable? What is the proper response?) You also consider what the battle meant to Germans, especially much later, in the nineteenth century, when nationalist feelings arose.
