Bioscience Essentials for Industry Professionals
(3.4 ceu)
MCLE credit: 32 hours
An elective in the Professional Sequence in Biotechnology Business and MarketingThe bioscience industry continues to thrive and serve as a source of new drug candidates, diagnostics, tools, and job opportunities for professionals from all disciplines. In order to work effectively in this knowledge-based industry, it is critical for non-scientific personnel to have a basic understanding of scientific foundations underlying the industry's activities as well as a working knowledge of the rapidly evolving core technologies.
This intensive course provides a focused introduction to the fundamental concepts and principles of biology, presented in the context of their relevance and application to the bioscience industry. Students develop the basic conceptual framework and vocabulary necessary to communicate effectively with technical specialists within their companies, and to comprehend the basic scientific concepts in proposals, prospectuses, and market and technical assessment reports. Additionally, participants explore current techniques and technologies while developing an appreciation of the process and the challenge of turning scientific discoveries into successful products.
Topics of discussion include basic molecular and cell biology, genetics, immunology, genomics, proteomics, and the drug discovery process. Basic human biology is also addressed as it relates to disease processes of therapeutic interest, including diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease, and nervous system disorders.
This course will benefit business, financial, technical, legal, regulatory, engineering, and computer science personnel, as well as others who are interested in working in the industry, but who lack a bioscience background.
