Management in the Construction Industry

X464 (2 semester units in Civ. & Env. Eng.)

A requirement in the Certificate Program in Construction Management

Managing a small-, medium-, or large-scale construction project is a complex process from beginning to end. An error can lead to cost overruns and costly delays, while good management can bring projects in on time and in line with the cost estimates. This course provides a practical, in-depth introduction to construction management and preconstruction services. Multimedia presentations by industry experts introduce participants to management techniques common in the industry.

Both individually and as a group, course participants cover preparing a Request for Proposal, including an estimate with the accompanying qualifications and assumptions; constructibility reviews and value engineering analyses; creating construction schedules; and developing staffing and general conditions costs for projects from the preconstruction stage through construction completion. You cover the answers to questions from Professional Construction Management, Including CM, Design-Construct, and General Contracting, by Donald Barrie and Boyd Paulson.

Participants learn to sharpen their ability to identify potential problems in the early stages, as well as to apply controls while maintaining project quality and the safety and health of all involved. Project deliveries, in terms of all aspects of preconstruction services and construction requirements, are covered in depth. This course is designed for project engineers, project managers, project superintendents, and project executives. Construction professionals with relevant minimum construction experience or an associate, bachelor's, or master's degree in engineering or construction with a few years of relevant experience benefit most from this course. Enrollment is limited.
