Tolstoy and War and Peace

This course offers a unique opportunity to read closely two important novels by Tolstoy: The Cossacks and War and Peace. The texts are explored along several avenues: the novels' historical and literary contexts; the tradition of realism in nineteenth century Russian literature; the literary devices employed; and the rich metaphysical, psychological, aesthetic, and political themes.
