A requirement in the Certificate Program in UNIX/Linux System Administration and the Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Information Systems and ManagementThis comprehensive investigation of advanced features of the UNIX operating system leads you to mastery of essential skills, including manipulating data using grep, sed, awk, join, and other power utilities; programming advanced applications using the shell; customizing user accounts; creating Internet sites; and performing fundamental system operations.
Note: This course offers instructor-led lectures and demonstrations as well as online assignments. Internet access is required; a login and password to access the Internet will be issued to you by the second class meeting.
Prerequisite: Successful completion of UNIX/Linux System Fundamentals X426.1A, or equivalent experience.

He has written leading UNIX texts with instructor support materials and conducted seminars for teaching professionals. He currently teaches UNIX for Fortune 500 companies and UC Berkeley Extension. He is president of Sherpa Press, publisher of university textbooks.

MARCELO CARVALHO, M.A., is a data network, voice communications, and software application engineer at Usabound, where he manages the company's servers, Voiceover Internet Protocol (VoIP) and data networks across the U.S. and Europe. He has been teaching UC Extension courses since 2000 on UNIX, shell programming, C language, and Perl programming. He served as technical reviewer for the third edition of the best-selling UNIX Made Easy. Carvalho also developed a textbook on Perl programming for his UC Berkeley Extension course.
