Cultural, Social, and Historical Overview of Alcohol- and Drug-Related Problems

A requirement in the Certificate Program in Alcohol and Drug Abuse StudiesPolitical and social contexts shape our views about and responses to drug use. This course explores the cultural and historical roots of evolving alcohol and drug policy in American society. Traditional substance-abuse service systems are investigated, as are critiques of the "war on drugs," and pressures to reform and innovate.

KEVIN MCGIRR, M.A., RN, is the acting director of quality management in the San Francisco Department of Public Health's Community Behavioral Services. He maintains a private practice, facilitates behavioral health groups for Kaiser Permanente San Francisco, and teaches at UCSF, San Francisco State and San Jose State universities.
