The Literary Garden: Readings in Landscape and Garden Design
X450 (1 semester unit in Landscape Architecture)
Study the history of and attitudes toward gardening and garden and landscape design as reflected in the writings of gardeners and designers. Classic and contemporary readings in landscape design including selections by designers Jekyll, Robinson, Downing, Jensen, Sackville-West, Church, Page, and Eckbo. You also examine classic Japanese and Chinese reading selections, and readings by garden theorists and critics. You explore themes such as the garden as place, time and metaphor in the garden, the garden and power, and the garden and nature.
Please note: The first class will meet at the UC Berkeley Extension Art and Design Center, 95 Third St., in San Francisco. All other meetings will take place at various locations in San Francisco and Woodside. You should wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather. In the case of bad weather, an indoor location will be arranged.
