Biotechnology Business Development
X415.1 (1 semester unit in Business Administration)
A required course in the Professional Sequence in Biotechnology Business and MarketingThis course outlines the critical role business development plays in managing the growth of small and midsize biotech companies from the preclinical stage to product approval. The course instructor and invited speakers address the following key topics:
- Understanding the biotechnology business model; financial requirements for asset management, growth, and product development; financing opportunities, including partnerships and alliances; expectations of return on investment.
- Out-licensing: Why, what, when, to whom, and for how much? Effectively managing the company product and IP portfolio to maximize growth and return and to mitigate risk.
- In-licensing: Why, what, when, from whom, and for how much? Effectively managing the company product pipeline to maximize growth and return and to mitigate risk.
- Structuring and negotiating successful license agreements between biotech and pharmaceutical companies, biotech and biotech, and such private-public partnerships as biotech and academia.
- The path to liquidity: mergers and acquisitions versus initial public offerings (IPOs).
The course includes case studies and real-world examples of both successful and failed companies. Course grading is based on class participation and completion of assigned project(s).

CONSTANCE MCKEE, M.B.A., is a founder of and current president and CEO of Manzanita Pharmaceuticals, Inc. She co-founded the California Antiviral Foundation; SynGenix Limited, where she served as chief executive; and BioE2E, where she served as a board member and president. Previously, she served as chief executive of Cambridge Quantum Fund I and co-executive director of Americans for Cures Foundation. McKee is a recipient of a Bosch Fellowship and holds an M.B.A. from Yale University School of Management and B.A. with distinction from Stanford University.Revised class schedule in red.
