UNIX/Linux System Fundamentals

A requirement in the Certificate Program in UNIX/Linux System Administration and the Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Information Systems and ManagementThis investigation of the UNIX operating system leads you to mastery of fundamental skills, including file editing, file management, command interpretation, and electronic communication. You also learn how to create and use directories, access data on a local network and on the Internet, use online documentation, manage user processes, employ utilities, protect files and directories, use variables, programming structures, access resources throughout the file system, and write shell scripts. No previous UNIX experience is required.

MARCELO CARVALHO, M.A., is a data network, voice communications, and software application engineer at Usabound, where he manages the company's servers, Voiceover Internet Protocol (VoIP) and data networks across the U.S. and Europe. He has been teaching UC Extension courses since 2000 on UNIX, shell programming, C language, and Perl programming. He served as technical reviewer for the third edition of the best-selling UNIX Made Easy. Carvalho also developed a textbook on Perl programming for his UC Berkeley Extension course.
