Writing for Magazines: A One-Day Seminar
Writing for magazines can be exciting, satisfying, and profitable. Whether your goal is to publish a timely news feature, an in-depth personality profile, a short story, or a personal essay, this information-packed one-day workshop helps you get started and expands your skill at getting published. During the morning, the instructor draws on more than 20 years of magazine writing experience to share inside tips on how to target what different publications want, write persuasive query letters, and approach editors. During the afternoon, a panel of outstanding local writers and editors share their expertise and perspectives on breaking into a variety of markets.

Elizabeth Fishel, program coordinator, has written for
Vogue,
Family Circle, Oprah's
O,
More,
Parents, and
Redbook, among others. She was a contributing editor at
Child magazine where her series, "Through the Eyes of a Child" was nominated for a National Magazine Award. She is the author of four nonfiction books and co-editor (with Terri Hinte) of
Something That Matters: Life, Love, and Unexpected Adventures in
the Middle of the Journey.
Rodes Fishburne has written for
The New Yorker, Oprah's
O,
Believer, and is the author
of the novel
Going to See the Elephant (Bantam Dell, 2009).
Nina Martin is the articles editor at
San Francisco. She was the founding editor of
BabyCenter magazine, a senior editor at
Health and
BabyTalk magazines, and on the staff of the
International Herald Tribune, the
Washington Post, and the
Baltimore Sun. She was nominated for a National Magazine Award in the public interest category in 2005.
Michael Mechanic is a senior editor at
Mother Jones magazine and former managing editor for the
East Bay Express. Before that, he was a senior writer and articles editor for
The Industry Standard and a staff reporter for
Metro newspapers.
Katharine Mieszkowski covered science and the environment for
Salon.com for many years. Her writing has also appeared in magazines including
Mother Jones,
Glamour,
Ms.,
Reader's Digest, and
San Francisco.
