Patricia Egan, M.S., has taught technical communication at the University of California Berkeley Extension since 2004. She has served as an adjudicator for the Society for Technical Communication’s Northern California Touchstone Competition and International Technical Communication awards. In 2009, Egan co-chaired the Localization Industry Standards Association’s global forum at Berkeley. She serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Internationalisation and Localisation and recently served on the review committee for the 2013 STC Ken Rainey Award for Excellence in Research. Her interests include the value of technical editing, technical communication for international audiences and the role of technical documentation in regulatory compliance.

A requirement in the Professional Sequence in Technical CommunicationEditing technical material requires specialized skills. This course focuses on how to edit different types of technical documents for clarity, consistency, cohesiveness and correctness. You learn to identify and correctly use specialized vocabulary and how to employ editing tools such as proofreader’s marks, style sheets, style guides and standard editorial reference materials. You also understand how to distinguish and correct common problems such as inconsistency, ambiguity and incorrect punctuation. This course requires frequent editing assignments; it assumes proficiency in English and a working knowledge of English grammar.
