The occurrence of mental health disorders is the norm in addictions counseling, and the integration of mental health and substance treatment is critical. Understand how to recognize the signs of commonly co-occurring disorders. Learn how to tailor substance abuse interventions to clients with different types of mental health problems and recognize when to refer clients elsewhere. You also examine research-based interventions such as motivational interviewing, social skills training, grounding and cognitive-behavioral therapy.
