X463 (2 semester units in Natural Resources)
Explore the impact of plastics on the environment, and learn to understand the relevant science in laypeople’s terms. Examine how plastics are made and how they differ from one another; then, study material sourcing, energy needs, permanence vs. degradability and other environmental issues. Study in detail four case studies in plastics: bisphenol A, grocery bags, polyvinyl chloride and polystyrene foam. Throughout the course, you consider the roles of governments and media and the lifestyles and anxieties that drive public attitudes about plastics.
