X416 (3 semester units in Landscape Architecture)
A requirement in the Certificate Program in Landscape Architecture and in the Professional Sequence in Cultural Landscape Preservation and ManagementExamine the development of the built environment in terms of landscape architecture, architecture, urban design and their interrelationship. Topics include the influences of Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece and Rome; Islamic achievements in Asia; urban planning during the Italian Renaissance; the gardens of Eastern Asia; the emergence and evolution of public parks and open spaces; and contemporary issues. Particular emphasis throughout the course is placed on the evolution and growth of the landscape architecture profession.

Courses are offered three terms per year: spring, summer, fall. Information about upcoming courses is available when enrollment opens each term.
- Spring term: Enrollment opens in early December. Classes begin in January.
- Summer term: Enrollment opens in early April. Classes begin in late May.
- Fall term: Enrollment opens in early July. Classes begin in August.

Lilly Schinsing, M.S., is an associate planner for the City of Sausalito, California, where she was the project manager for the City of Sausalito's Housing Element Update. Her work includes utilized time-lapse behavior mapping, a survey of female and male adult park users, and a questionnaire mailed to neighbors of study parks.
