Computer Information Systems: Analysis and Design
Note: The Certificate Program in Computer Information Systems (CIS) Certificate is closed to new enrollments and is being phased out. No further registrations into
the Computer Information Systems certificate will be accepted. Related stand-alone courses in
this area will continue to be offered from term to term. For all
questions, call (510) 642-4151 or e-mail course@unex.berkeley.edu.
Please refer to the new Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Information Systems and Management (ISM) as a replacement for the Computer Information Systems (CIS) Certificate.
Prepare yourself for a new career in the IT field. Expand your expertise and take
your skills to the next level. Our rigorous curriculum combines theory and practice to give you a
balanced mix of skills and the powerful tools you'll need to build a successful career in computer
programming, systems analysis, or computer consulting. On successful completion you will be
able to define, manage, and execute a systems approach to the business environment, write
computer programs using C or Java, maximize the capability of the UNIX operating system, and
design database and computer network systems.
Prerequisites/recommended background
This program is designed for business or nontechnical degree holders who want to enter the
computer field and for professionals who want in-depth knowledge of information systems. You
should be familiar with programming logic and design concepts. A bachelor's degree is desirable
but not necessary.
Required courses
The new curriculum consists of seven required courses adding up to a minimum of 240 hours and
16 semester units of study. We recommend taking these courses in the following sequence:
All coursework must be completed within three years of enrollment in the first required course.
All courses must be taken for academic credit and for a grade. A cumulative 3.0 grade point
average is required to earn the certificate; each course must be completed with a grade of C or
better. A Certificate with Distinction is awarded to those who complete the program with a 3.5
grade point average or better.
Substitutions
Certificate candidates may substitute up to two courses taken at another institution for certificate
requirements. Original transcripts and course descriptions are required, and UC Berkeley
Extension must approve substitutions in writing. Contact the program office for guidelines.
