Project Management

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How long does it take to complete the Project Management certificate?
A.
By taking two courses per term, you can complete the Project Management certificate within three terms (one year). You have a maximum of five years, from the first day of the first course, to complete all coursework.

Q. What is the schedule for Project Management courses? In what locations are the classes held?
A.
Courses are offered in San Francisco, Berkeley, Belmont and online. The classroom-based courses are generally offered in the evenings and on Saturdays. Get information on current schedule and locations.

Q. What is the cost of the certificate program?
A.
The cost of the certificate is the sum of the individual courses, plus a $150 certificate registration fee. The total fees for the program are between $4,850 and $5,150, depending on the format of the courses you choose. Costs are subject to change.

You should register for the certificate prior to enrolling in your third course in the curriculum.

Once you have completed the final course in the sequence, you will need to notify the program office of your completion so that your records can be reviewed and the certificate issued.

Q. Can the courses be taken out of order?
A.
We require that you take Project Management X470 first. Other courses may be taken in any sequence, but we recommend this sequence for the six courses:

  1. Project Management X470
  2. Project Procurement Management X474.3
  3. Quality Management X470.9
  4. Human Factors and Team Dynamics for Project Management X469.2
  5. Project Risk Management X440.4
  6. Project Planning and Control X471.9

Q. Can this certificate be completed online?
A.
Yes. You can take courses online or in the classroom. You can choose the format for each course when you enroll. Find out more about Extension's online learning.

Q. What is the format of the online courses?
A.
Online project management courses are generally scheduled in a 12-week format with a specific start and end date.

Q. I have already taken a few courses at another college. Can I transfer the credits to UC Berkeley Extension?
A.
Yes, you may request transfer of up to two courses. Transfer approvals are subject to departmental review of the course(s). Please contact the Business department at business@unex.berkeley.edu for further information.

Q. Are any of the units from the UC Berkeley Extension Certificate Program in Project Management transferable?
A.
Transfer of credit is always based on acceptance by the receiving institution. It is possible, though not guaranteed, that our courses will be accepted into other institutions. Please check with that institution’s Department of the Registrar, even if it is UC Berkeley.

We do have an articulation agreement with the University of Wisconsin’s online Master of Science in Project Management. Learn more.

Q. Do I have to complete the certificate program to take the PMP Exam?
A.
No, though our certificate will certainly prepare you for the PMP Exam. Our certificate is designed to provide in-depth learning, and many people who already have their PMP credential choose to pursue our certificate for their professional development.

However, we do offer Intensive PMP/CAPM Exam Preparation (as a hybrid or in an online format) course specifically for the PMP Exam. Please keep in mind that there are other criteria required to be eligible to sit for this exam. For information on how to obtain your credential, please review the Project Management Institute's PMP Handbook.

Q. When may I find out about and enroll in future-term courses?
A.
Courses are offered three terms per year: fall, spring and summer. Information about upcoming courses is available when enrollment opens each term.

Q. Whom do I contact for more information?
A.
Contact Program Director Tom Kendrick at tkendrick@unex.berkeley.edu or (510) 643-2180.
