Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Information Systems and Management

Our rigorous curriculum combines theory and practice to give you a balanced mix of skills and the powerful tools you'll need to build a successful career in information management, systems analysis, computer programming, or computer consulting. On successful completion you will be able to define, manage, and execute a systems approach to the business environment, write computer programs and design database systems.

This program is designed for professionals who want in-depth knowledge of information systems. You should be familiar with programming logic and design concepts. A bachelor's degree is necessary. Students in the Information Systems and Management Certificate Program must take at least 10 total semester units of classes to receive the certificate. At least six (6) semester units of the 10 required must come from the core courses list.

All ISM students planning on taking UNIX/Linux and/or database courses are suggested to have a pre-configured laptop or desktop computer with a combination of database software, MS Windows, and UNIX/Linux. Students should also have administrator/root user privileges and a willingness to install software on their laptop or desktop computer.

Core Courses
(A minimum of six of the 10 semester units required must be taken from this list.)

• Introduction to Information Systems Analysis and Design X422 (3 semester units, 45 hours)
• Advanced Business Systems Analysis X423 (3 semester units, 45 hours)
• Concepts of Relational Database Management Systems X408 (3 semester units, 45 hours)
• Using the UNIX Operating System X415 (3 semester units, 45 hours)
• Fundamentals of Data Communications and Networking X433 (2 semester units, 30 hours)

Note: You can choose to take all 10 semester units in the core courses list.

Electives

• Any one 2-unit course in C or Java
• Any one 2-unit course in SQL or Database Technology
• Any one 1-unit programming course in Perl, Python, or PHP

Certificate Application Procedure

Interested students must register for the certificate program before they begin their third course in the program. Applications will not be accepted after the third course is taken. To register, please (1) complete and submit the Program Registration Form or (2) print out and complete the form at www.unex.berkeley.edu/cert/certproginfo.html. Mail or fax it as it indicates, and include the nonrefundable registration fee.

Since this is a post-baccalaureate certificate, students must submit the following prior to enrolling in the program:

• Official transcript proof of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution
• Hard copy of the degree received

Please note that the application form will be denied or put on hold until the above documents are received by the academic department.
