UNIX/Linux System Administration Certificate Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How many classes do I need to take in order to complete the certificate program?
A.
All certificate candidates must complete 14 semester units (210 hours) of required courses and one 2-unit (30-hour) elective course for a total of 16 units/240 hours. Students have five years to complete the program. All courses are given for academic credit.

Q. Are there prerequisites or a recommended first course in the certificate program?
A.
There are no prerequisites. We recommend that you first take UNIX/Linux System Fundamentals X426.1A.

Q. How long does it take to complete the certificate program?
A.
The certificate can be completed at your own pace; however, most students complete the certificate between two and five years. You must complete within five years of your first course enrollment.

Q. Is the program offered online?
A.
Currently, we offer Using the UNIX Operating System X415, a substitute for UNIX/Linux Systems Fundamentals X426.1A, and Java: Discovering Its Power X436.2 and Introduction to Perl Programming X416.7 are online. Both of these courses may be used for the program. Please visit www.unex.berkeley.edu/online for further information about our online classes.

The online course Using the UNIX Operating System X415 can be substituted for UNIX/Linux Systems Fundamentals X426.1A, and the online courses Java: Discovering Its Power X436.2 and Introduction to Perl Programming X416.7 can be substituted for their classroom versions. All other substitutions or waivers are allowed on a case-by-case basis.

Q. How much does it cost to complete the certificate program?
A.
There is a $100 registration fee to enroll in the certificate program. Each course is paid for separately at the time of enrollment. Because the course fees may vary from course to course, and semester to semester, we do not have an estimated cost for the certificate program.

Q. Is there an installment payment plan?
A.
No. You may enroll in each class individually as you progress through the program, but all tuition fees for a given course must be paid in full when enrolling in a course.

Q. How do I have to register for the certificate program?
A.
Courses start throughout the year. You may begin the program in any term. We recommend that you register for the program after the first course in the program. You can register online using our secure Program Registration Form, or print out a PDF version of the form available at www.unex.berkeley.edu/cert/certproginfo.html, and mail it with the nonrefundable fee.

Q. How do I enroll in a course?
A.
You may enroll online at our website, by phone, or by mail. To enroll online, click on the course title on the certificate program page. On the course description page, select the location. Then, in the box that appears, click "Enroll." Fill out the online enrollment form. The cost of a course is shown on each course description page. The fee for a course must be paid at the time you enroll.

Q. Can I take a class Pass/No Pass and use it towards earning my certificate of completion?
A.
No. Candidates must take all classes for a credit letter grade (CLG) and receive a grade of "C" of better to earn the certificate of completion.

Q. After completing the program, how do I get the certificate of completion?
A.
You are expected to complete the course requirements for the Certificate Program within five years of taking the first course.
