Project Management Certificate Program
Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How long does it take to complete the program?
A.
The program can be completed at your own pace. By taking two courses per term, you can complete the certificate program within three semesters (one year); however, the course requirements must be completed within five years to earn a certificate of completion. You must notify us in writing when you have received the final grade report for your last course. We will review your records to issue your certificate of completion.

Q. What is the registration procedure?
A.
You may enroll in courses before you officially register for the certificate program but must register by the time you complete your third course. To register online, complete the secure registration form.

Q. How much does it cost to complete the program?
A.
The estimated cost of the program is the sum of the individual courses plus a $100 certificate registration fee. The total fees are between $4,200 and $4,700, depending on your choice of format for the courses. Each course is paid for separately at the time of enrollment. These costs are subject to change and do not include textbooks and/or course materials.

Q. Should the courses be taken in a particular order?
A.
We recommend that you take all six courses in the following order:

  1. Project Management X470
  2. Project Procurement Management X474.3
  3. Quality Management X470.9
  4. Human Factors and Team Dynamics for Project Management X469.2
  5. Project Risk Management X440.4
  6. Project Planning and Control X471.9

Q. What day does a class start? Where does it take place, etc.?
A.
Courses are offered in San Francisco, Berkeley, Redwood City, and online. The classroom-based courses are generally offered in the evening, although some are also offered on Saturdays. For all information on current courses, please consult our course catalog or project management certificate website at extension.berkeley.edu/cert/project.html.

Q. Is the program offered online?
A.
Yes, you can complete courses online or in the classroom. Each term when you enroll in a course, you can choose either. For online courses, please visit extension.berkeley.edu/cert/projecton.html.

Q. What is the format of the online courses?
A.
Most are 12-week fixed-date courses with a specific start date and end date. New in fall 2009, we began offering an accelerated eight-week fixed-date format for two courses: Project Management X470 and Project Risk Management X440.4.

Q. I already took a few of the required courses at another college. Can I transfer the credits to UC Berkeley Extension?
A.
You may request to transfer up to two (2) courses from an accredited U.S. university if the courses were taken in the last five years. Our department must approve the course(s) for transfer. Please contact the department program representative for more information.

Q. Are semester units from UC Berkeley Extension transferable to other institutions?
A.
The transfer of credit is always pending acceptance by the receiving institution. It is possible—although not guaranteed—that our courses will be accepted into other institutions. Please check with that institution's Department of the Registrar before enrolling, even if it is UC Berkeley.

Q. I am interested in taking the PMP Exam. Do I need to complete the certificate program in order to take the PMP Exam?
A.
No, though our certificate program will certainly prepare you for the PMP Exam. Our program is designed to provide in-depth learning, and many people who already have their PMP credential choose to pursue our program for their professional development.

However, we do offer an PMP/CAPM Hybrid Preparation Seminar specifically for the PMP Exam. Please keep in mind that there are other requirements to be eligible to sit for this exam. For information on how to obtain your credential, please review the PMI-PMP Handbook at www.pmi.org/PDF/pdc_pmphandbook.pdf.

Q. Whom do I contact for more information?
A.
We have program coordinators for both the classroom-based and online courses:

Classroom: Kim Wilburn, kwilburn@unex.berkeley.edu

Online: Nia Mateialona, nmateialona@unex.berkeley.edu
