California Water Management & Ecosystem Restoration
This certificate program has been discontinued as of 2008 and is not accepting new students. If you have any questions or need help as you plan to complete the program, please call (510) 642-4151.
The California Water Management and Ecosystem Restoration curriculum provides you with
knowledge of the historical, legal, regulatory, policy-related, scientific, and technical aspects
of this field. Coursework combines an applied focus with a theoretical approach to this complex
enterprise, enabling participants who plan and implement water management and ecosystem
projects to function more effectively and progress in their careers.
Certificate requirements
Successful completion of the certificate program requires a total of 210 hours/14 units, consisting
of five required courses (90 hours/6 units) plus 120 hours/8 units of elective courses. All
coursework must be completed within five years of registration in the first course. All credit courses must be taken for academic credit and completed with a letter grade of C or better. A cumulative grade
point average of 3.0 or higher is required in order to earn the certificate. A Certificate with
Distinction is awarded to candidates who finish with a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher.
You must notify the department in writing after you receive your final grade report for the last class.
Prerequisites
A college degree is highly recommended, but not required. Equivalent experience is expected of
any participant without a degree. To derive maximum
benefit from this program, students must be competent in college math. Students must fulfill
each course's prerequisites or have permission of the instructor or program director. Prerequisites
for individual courses are noted in course descriptions.
Taking short (ceu) courses
Short courses are noncredit courses in which you earn continuing education units (ceu). You may
take up to a maximum of 4.2 ceu toward completion of the certificate. In counting your total
number of units, please note that a 3.0-ceu course is considered equivalent to a 2-unit credit
course, and a 1.5-ceu course is considered equivalent to a 1-unit credit course.
Substitutions
No more than 60 hours, usually consisting of two
30-hour courses, may be substituted in the certificate program. "Substitution" means a course
from another accredited non-UC university or college that covers
the same material as a required course. Substitutions must be requested in writing, accompanied
by course descriptions and original, official transcripts. Substitution approvals are at the
discretion of the program director, and requests are acknowledged in
writing. No substitutions of noncredit courses are accepted.
Transfer of courses from other UC Extension campuses
Up to four equivalent courses from other UC Extension campuses may be used as substitutes for
required or elective courses in this program, subject to approval of the program director.
"Equivalent" means the courses must be in the same content area, they must be taken for a letter
grade, and they must be of equal length.
