How to Apply
Only complete applications including all original documents will be considered for admission. We cannot accept fax or e-mail copies of any application documents.
A complete application must include the following original documents:
- Enrollment Application
- Statement of Purpose and background
- Financial Statement and certification dated within 90 days of your application
- Translation of financial statement into English
- Résumé/curriculum vitae (c.v.)
- Proof of English language proficiency
- Proof of university degree completion
- Translation of university documents
- Copy of passport photo identification page and expiration date
- $100 Application fee

Access to your documents
Once submitted, all application materials become the property of the UC Berkeley Extension and CANNOT be returned, duplicated, or forwarded to a third party at any time.
Notice of acceptance
The full application review process can take from three to five weeks. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, in the order they are received, and only complete applications will be reviewed. As IDP courses can fill before the application deadline, you are encouraged to send an application as soon as possible. You will hear directly from the admissions department regarding your acceptance status and further instructions.
Statement of Purpose and Background
Please type a brief statement in your own words (maximum 350 words) explaining your interest in the proposed field of study and your previous background. Be sure to
- include your full name and the name of the diploma program to which you are applying.
- discuss your personal interest in the intended field of study.
- discuss your academic and/or work experience.
- describe courses taken or work experience that meet specific prerequisites for the program to which you are applying.
Financial statement and certification dated within 90 days of your application
The U.S. government requires that you demonstrate sufficient financial resources will be available to you while studying in the United States. Please use the chart below to estimate your total expenses. You may provide financial certification in one of two ways:
- Complete the "Financial Statement and certification" portion of the application form.
- Submit a letter from a bank. If someone else is providing proof of financial support, please clearly indicate your relationship to this person and make sure they sign where indicated.
Note: If family members will be accompanying you to the United States, you must add $600 per month for your spouse and $400 per month for each child to your estimated expenses (figures in U.S. dollars).

Résumé/curriculum vitae (C.V.)
- Include a chronological list of all employment and the duties you performed.
- Please include all degrees earned or courses attended, and any other experience that may be of interest to the academic review committee.
Proof of English language proficiency
Please submit your score from an English language test in accordance with the stated requirements. (Results must be from test taken within past two years.) The ETS Institution code is 9216 and the department code is 00.
Note: IDP will no longer accept the TOEIC Exam as proof of language proficiency as of November 20, 2009.

- UC Berkeley Extension has agreements with several English as a second language schools in the United States to accept Institutional TOEFL scores.
- Students are required to submit official evidence of English language proficiency. Exemptions are made for those students who hold a bachelor's degree (or higher) from a university located in the United States or in another country in which English is both the spoken language and the medium of instruction.
Proof of university degree completion
You must have completed a university degree for IDP admission.
- Graduates of recognized academic institutions outside the United States should hold a degree equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's degree. Equivalency is determined by the International Diploma Programs office.
- Submit a copy of your diploma showing award of a bachelor's degree.
- Include an original and official, complete record of each course studied and the marks earned in each subject (complete academic transcripts). Academic records should be issued in their original languages and accompanied by English translations (usually prepared by the university or an official translator). In general, records or transcripts must be issued by the school and should include the school's stamp or embossed seal and the signature of the authorizing official. In some countries, copies certified by notaries or governmental officials are acceptable, but copies certified by translators or U.S. notaries are not acceptable.
Note: If you have completed both an undergraduate and a graduate degree, please submit both original and official complete records.
Translations of university documents
An official English translation is required.
Copy of your passport photo identification page and expiration date
- Include the page in your passport showing your full name and the expiration date.
- Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond the last date of your program of study in the United States.
$100 Application fee
- Your application cannot be reviewed without this fee.
- Payment by credit card: Include your credit card number, expiration date, and approval signature with your application.
- Payment by money order or bank draft: Make it payable to UC Regents. Your money order or bank draft must be drawn on an account held at a U.S. bank or a U.S. branch of an international bank.
