Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Berkeley Summer Engineering Institute?
Now in its seventh year, our annual series of short courses continue to provide you the opportunity to meet and learn from leading faculty, researchers, and industry experts. Held on the UC Berkeley campus and in nearby San Francisco, the Institute provides an opportunity for professionals in a variety of fields to come together. The Institute offers a broad range of rigorous courses updated annually to allow the engineering community the opportunity to learn from one another and keep abreast of the latest advances in their fields.

Who should attend?
Engineers and scientists seeking an intensive update in advanced engineering technologies. Managers can also benefit by participating in courses that build their skills and understanding of technical areas related to their work.

Who are the faculty and sponsors?
Institute courses are taught by faculty from UC Berkeley's College of Engineering, and their associates from other leading universities and corporations. The Institute is sponsored by the Division of Continuing Education in Engineering, UC Berkeley Extension, and the UC Berkeley College of Engineering.

What is the cancellation policy?
Any cancellation is subject to a $30 processing fee unless otherwise stated. Cancellations received less than five working days from the start of the course are subject to a $100 cancellation fee. You may substitute someone in your place at any time without penalty. If the course is not held for any reason, UC Berkeley Extension's liability is limited to refund of the full course fee. We do not refund travel or accommodation costs or any expenses other than the full course fee in the event of course cancellation.

What are continuing education units (ceu)?
These units are a nationally recognized means of recording noncredit study and are accepted by many employers and relicensure agencies as evidence of a serious commitment to career advancement and the maintenance of professional competence. One ceu is awarded for each 10 hours of attendance. If you want us to keep a record of your ceu study, you must fill out and return a form that will be distributed in class.

How do I enroll?
Enrollment may be made by companies or individuals. Enrollment is limited and advanced enrollment is required.

Enroll in a course by clicking "Enroll" on a course description page. If you wish to enroll via phone, fax, or in person, see enrollment information.

Do I need to confirm my enrollment?
If you enroll and have not received an enrollment confirmation five days prior to the scheduled date of the course, please call (510) 642-4151 to confirm that the course will convene as scheduled. Since Extension is self-supporting, it is necessary to establish a minimum enrollment. If the minimum is not met at least one week prior to the course date, the course may be canceled; if so, enrollees will be notified. | Top |

Check-in Information

Sign-in will take place on the first day of class, 30 minutes before class begins. This is your opportunity to pick-up course materials.

Bring Your Business Cards
Due to privacy issues, we do not distribute a roster of student contact information. However in order to maximize your opportunities for networking with your classmates, we encourage you to bring your business cards. There will be space available in the classroom for a Business Card Exchange Table, where you can drop off your cards and pick up cards from others. Many of our students have made valuable contacts by attending our courses, and we hope you will do the same.
