Peachpit Press and UC Berkeley Extension Announce Winners of the Marjorie Baer Scholarship for Editorial Excellence

Berkeley, CA (Sept. 10, 2009)—Peachpit Press and UC Berkeley Extension are pleased to announce the winners of the first annual Marjorie Baer Scholarship for Editorial Excellence: Heather Mulroney, a former high school teacher from Miami, and Lucy Salcido Carter, a program manager for nonprofits from the San Francisco Bay Area.

The scholarship covers the full cost of UC Berkeley Extension’s highly respected Professional Sequence in Editing program, the only editing program of its kind in the Bay Area.

“As a stay-at-home mom for the past two years, UC Berkeley Extension’s professional editing program allows me to develop the skills I need while continuing to care for my son,” said scholarship recipient Heather Mulroney who wants to pursue a career as a health and science editor. “It’s an honor to receive the Marjorie Baer Scholarship; it gives me an opportunity I could not otherwise afford.” Mulroney is taking the program online and recently enrolled in the Grammar, Mechanics and Usage for Editors course.

“We’re very excited to award our first two scholarships to these deserving students,” said Liz McDonough, the program’s director. “We had applicants from across the country and the selection process was very competitive.”

Scholarship recipient Lucy Salcido Carter, who has worked for several years with Bay Area nonprofits and foundations that serve low-income families, plans to use the scholarship to make a career change. “I hope to work as an editor on publications that get information into the hands of readers who will use it to improve their own and other people’s lives,” she said.

Peachpit Press, a Berkeley-based division of Pearson Education, and UC Berkeley Extension established the scholarship last year in the name of Marjorie Baer, a former executive editor at Peachpit Press, in recognition of her extraordinary contributions to the publishing community.

“As senior executive editor at Peachpit, Marjorie Baer influenced all areas of our publishing plans, including acquisitions strategy and editorial development across all our imprints,” said Nancy Davis, editor in chief of Peachpit Press. “She was most proud of her work training authors and editors on how to craft good books.”

The Professional Sequence in Editing is a concentrated four-course program, designed for professional editors who want to add skills as well as those seeking to make a career change into editorial work. The program includes instruction in grammar, mechanics, and usage, along with copyediting, line editing and developmental editing. Courses for the 2009 fall term begin September 8; students may enroll for program courses online or in the classroom.

The 2010 Marjorie Baer Scholarship Application deadline is December 1, 2009. Students beginning the Professional Sequence in Editing program between January and June 2010 are eligible for the scholarship. More information about the scholarship.
