Two programs provide options for college-bound students unable to find classes
Berkeley, CA. (Dec. 21, 2009)—In the wake of massive budget cuts to California's state universities and community colleges, UC Berkeley Extension provides solutions for students faced with decreasing acceptance rates and dwindling course offerings. The continuing education division of the University of California, Berkeley, Extension offers undergraduate-level courses, as well as concurrent enrollment in conjunction with UC Berkeley, to help students get the classes they need this spring.
Ideal for students who are sitting on university wait-lists or seeking to supplement their community college course offerings, Extension offers more than 140 undergraduate-level courses. All courses carry academic credit that is transferable to four-year institutions and graduate schools—from lower-division (freshman and sophomore) courses in general biology and precalculus to upper-division (junior and senior) classes in psychology, biochemistry, and more. High school students who want to get a jump on university curricula can also benefit from these courses, all of which are reviewed and approved by UC Berkeley.
In addition, UC Berkeley Extension's concurrent enrollment program provides an opportunity for anyone to enroll in UC Berkeley courses, on campus, on a space-available basis. Students who need to fulfill a course requirement in a specific subject area, satisfy prerequisites for graduate school, or earn additional units to complete a degree find that concurrent enrollment is an economical way to pick up the classes they need. Spring courses are available for concurrent enrollment across a broad range of subject areas, and most have either no prerequisites or common prerequisites that are taken by a large percentage of students. Students do not need to be admitted to UC Berkeley to apply for concurrent enrollment.
Spring 2010 enrollment is now under way at UC Berkeley Extension, with courses available in San Francisco, Berkeley, Redwood City, and online. For more information about concurrent enrollment, visit extension.berkeley.edu/info/concurrent.html.
