Use your previous work experience to start a new career in teaching. UC Berkeley Extension offers two educational tracks that prepare you to teach adults in a variety of learning environments.
The first option is the California Teaching Credential in Adult Education—approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC)—which opens classroom doors in a wide range of academic and vocational subject areas. Note: When you have completed three courses plus an elective, you are eligible for a UC Berkeley Extension certificate of completion. See the Professional Program in Adult Education and Instruction for more information.
The second option is the Professional Program in Adult Education and Instruction, which provides key teaching and training skills for use in a variety of educational and professional training settings.
Both options can be pursued on a full- or part-time basis, while you teach and/or work.
Academic subjects, including:
For academic subjects:
You must have completed a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution, with coursework in the subject you plan to teach and have passed the CBEST.
For vocational subjects:
You do not need a bachelor's degree; you can teach a vocational subject using your years of subject-related work experience as a substitute for a degree. Contact the Education department at (510) 642-1171 for more details.
There are five parts to earning the Adult Education Teaching credential: (1) the application for the preliminary credential, (2) credential coursework, (3) teaching experience, (4) health education, and (5) the application for the Clear Credential.
