Focus on energy use and its impact on the environment in this new professional program from UC Berkeley Extension. Understand the impact of current energy use patterns on climate change, and of climate change law such as California's AB 32 on local government and businesses. Examine energy sustainability from the perspectives of technology, municipal planning, and policy.
With the specialized knowledge you gain from this program designed for professionals working in both the public and private sectors—from government agencies and nonprofit organizations to utility companies, energy consulting firms, and other businesses—you're prepared to manage energy use and develop sustainable energy systems successfully.
The program consists of four courses, including two academic credit courses (two semester units) and two one-day workshops.
Energy Use and Climate Change X435 (offered summer and fall terms)
Energy for Sustainability: Technology, Planning, and Policy X436 (offered summer and spring terms)
Introduction to Sustainability Management (0.7 ceu) (offered summer and fall terms)
Climate Change and Law AB 32 (0.7 ceu) (offered summer and fall terms)
Are there prerequisites for admission?
There are no prerequisites for the Professional Program in Sustainability and Energy.
Do I need to fill out a formal application to either enter the program or receive a certificate on completion?
No. In order to begin the program, simply enroll in your first class and continue taking them each term until you have completed the 44 hours of coursework. Be sure to indicate on the Extension course roster that you wish to receive credit in a CEU course or a letter grade in an academic course. When you have completed the program, please call (510) 642-4151 to request your certificate.
What is the minimum requirement to receive a certificate of completion?
You must complete all academic courses with a grade C or better and receive credit for all CEU courses.
How does the Professional Program in Sustainability and Energy prepare professionals?
Courses in this program provide knowledge on principles of sustainability management and impact of climate change law on businesses and government. Courses are aimed at equipping professionals with specialized knowledge and practical tools in understanding and managing interrelated issues on energy use, climate change, and sustainability.

Who is eligible to take the courses in this program?
Although there are no specific degrees or course requirements for this program, it is primarily intended for professionals, planners, and utility managers who have a bachelor’s degree and some knowledge in the energy field. Small business owners, consultants, and entrepreneurs who wish to conduct business in this sector will also benefit from this professional program.

How long does it take to complete the program?
The program can be completed at your own pace. It will take a minimum of one semester to complete the program; however, the courses can be taken over the course of two years to earn a certificate of completion.
Should the courses be taken in a particular order?
Courses may be taken in any order, but we recommend that you start the program with Introduction to Sustainability Management.
Can I substitute a course into this program?
No, the courses in this program are required and must be taken in order to earn the certificate of completion.
Is the program offered online?
At this time, we do not have an online or distance learning format. All courses must be completed in the classroom.
How much does it cost to complete the program?
The approximate cost of the program is $1,450. Each course is paid for separately at the time of enrollment. Because the course fees may vary from semester to semester, this is only an estimate.

Once I obtain a certificate upon completion of the program, how will this affect my career and income?
This program allows professionals and managers to focus their learning in this specialized area of energy use, climate change, and sustainability. Upon completion, you will be able to list this program from UC Berkeley Extension on your résumé and on job applications. Some of the courses in this program may be transferable to the Environmental Management and Sustainability System certificate, which is under development.
Is job placement assistance available for graduates of UC Berkeley Extension's certificate program?
UC Berkeley Extension does not provide job assistance. Some instructors, however, may have information about job opportunities within their companies or industries.
