Q. How many classes do I need to take in order to complete the professional sequence?
A. The program consists of four to five courses (total of 8 semester units/120 hours), including three required courses (6 semester units/90 hours) and one to two Technical Communication elective courses (2 semester units/30 hours) as listed in the program requirements.
Q. Are there prerequisites or a recommended first course in the professional sequence?
A. There are no prerequisites. We recommend that you first take Technical Communication I X465.
Q. How long does it take to complete the professional sequence?
A. The certificate can be completed at your own pace. It will take a minimum of one year to complete the certificate; however, most students complete the certificate between two and five years. You must complete the professional sequence within five years of enrolling in your first course.
Q. How much does it cost to complete the professional sequence?
A. Each course is paid for separately at the time of enrollment. Because the course fees may vary from course to course, and semester to semester, we do not have an estimated cost for the professional sequence. There is also a $75 registration fee to enroll in the professional sequence.
Q. Is the program offered online?
A. Currently we offer Technical Writing X412, a substitute for Technical Communication I X465, and Technical Communication II X466 online. Both of these courses may be used for the program. Please visit www.unex.berkeley.edu/online for further information about our online classes.
Q. When do I need to register for the professional sequence?
A. Courses start throughout the year. You may register for the professional sequence in any semester. We recommend that you register for the program after the first course. You can register online using our secure Program Registration Form or by phone at (510) 642-4111 referring to EDP #302356. There is a $75 registration fee.
Q. After completing the professional sequence, how do I obtain the certificate of completion?
A. You are expected to complete the course requirements for the professional sequence within five years of taking the first course. You must notify us in writing when you have received the final grade report for your last course. You can send us an e-mail to course@unex.berkeley.edu. After verifying successful completion of all coursework and program requirements, Extension awards your certificate of completion. It normally takes about six (6) to eight (8) weeks to process your certificate request.
Q. Can I substitute any of my courses into the professional sequence?
A. The online courses Technical Writing X412 can be substituted for Technical Communication I X465, and the online course Technical Communication II X466 can be substituted for its classroom version. No other substitutions or waivers are allowed in the professional sequence.
Q. How is the Professional Sequence in Technical Communication (EDP #302356) different from the Certificate Program in Technical Communication (EDP #302422)?
A.The professional sequence supersedes the certificate program. It is shorter and simpler. You will still receive a certificate of completion upon completing the required courses and program requirements.
Q. May I finish the Certificate Program in Technical Communication (EDP #302422)?
A. Yes, if you are currently enrolled and a student in good standing in the certificate program, you may complete it within the official timelines and requirements. Presently, the certificate program is closed to new enrollments.
Q. I have not finished the Certificate Program in Technical Communication (EDP #302422). May I complete the Professional Sequence in Technical Communication (EDP #302356) instead?
A. Yes. Please contact our office for further assistance at (510) 642-4151.
Q. Is student advising available?

In the box that appears, click "Enroll," and fill out the online enrollment form. The cost of a course is shown on each course description page. The fee for a course must be paid at the time you enroll.
Q. Is there an installment payment plan?
