As the U.S. population ages, the number of age-related morbidities will increase and the need for knowledgeable health, social service, and mental health professionals will continue to grow. The Professional Program in Aging and Mental Health includes a series of continuing education unit (CEU) workshops offered by leading researchers and clinicians in the Bay Area. Workshops in this program provide an update on aging and mental health research and counseling tools used in a variety of settings. Courses are aimed at helping professionals stay current in this field and become better clinicians in their work with older adults and their families. Course availability is subject to change. Workshops may be taken in any order; however, it is recommended that you take the required Assessment and Treatment of Mental Illness in Older Adults first, and as you near the end the program, take the Clinical Case Seminar on Aging and Mental Health workshop.

Who Will Benefit

This program is primarily intended for mental health clinicians, nurses and social services professionals who have a graduate degree in the field and are licensed psychologists, clinical social workers or marriage and family therapists. Psychiatrists and psychiatric nurses, as well as a range of professionals working in long-term care settings, may also take workshops in this program.

Prerequisites for Admission

There are no specific degrees required for the Professional Program in Aging and Mental Health.

Curriculum Requirements

The curriculum comprises 2 required workshops and 36 hours of electives for a total of 6.0 ceu (60 hours of instruction).

All coursework must be completed within five years of registering for the program. However, requirements may be updated based on new developments in the field of study; we recommend completing the curriculum in a timely fashion. How to Register for This Specialized Program of Study

By registering, you declare your intention to complete the curriculum. To register for the Professional Program in Aging and Mental Health, submit the online registration form with your credit card information or complete the mail-in registration form. The registration fee is nonrefundable.

Estimated Cost

Each course is priced individually, and you pay the course fee at the time of enrollment. The program has an estimated cost of $2,000 (not including course materials or registration fee). Course fees are subject to change.

Professional Organizations

The continuing education (CE) credit for each course, if available, is listed after the course title in the online and print catalogs. We use the following abbreviations: BRN, Board of Registered Nursing (Provider 00226); LCSW/MFT, courses that meet the qualifications for CE credit for LCSWs and MFTs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (PCE 1505). CE credits for psychologists: UC Berkeley Extension is approved by the American Psychological Association (APA) to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. UC Berkeley Extension maintains responsibility for this program and its content.
