Established by UC Berkeley in 1891, Extension is one of the largest and oldest continuing education operations in the United States. As a self-supporting organization, UC Berkeley Extension offers more than 1,500 personal enrichment and professional development classes throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and California, the United States, and internationally. Extension delivers instruction on-site and through online and hybrid class formats. Extension’s enrollments total approximately 35,000 annually.
UC Berkeley Extension employs approximately 200 employees at its headquarters in downtown Berkeley (two blocks west of the Berkeley campus) and in five centers around the Bay Area. All Extension employees are employees of UC Berkeley and eligible for all UC Berkeley employee benefits. In addition, Extension employees may take Extension courses at no charge, depending on availability.
