UC Berkeley Extension's Business and Management department provides the general public and Bay Area corporations courses, certificate programs, contract training, seminars, workshops, institutes, and professional conferences in various fields including Accounting, Business Administration and Communication, Economics, Entrepreneurship, Finance, Human Resources, Law, Leadership and Management, Marketing, Personal Financial Planning, and Project Management. Enrollments in the business and management programs total approximately 5400 annually. Reporting to the Associate Dean of UC Berkeley Extension, the Director of the Department of Business and Management sets the department’s strategic direction, leads a staff of approximately 6.0 FTE, and maintains the academic quality and sound financial management of the department.

Program Director, Engineering and Technology, CE II

The Department of Engineering and Technology invites applications for the full-time position of Program Director to manage courses, contracts and curricula in the engineering and technology fields, a portfolio which offers approximately 200 courses to 2300 enrollments annually. May also include energy, environmental and civil engineering areas.

Major Responsibilities and Duties

Program development and administration in engineering & technology and related programs:
Leadership position, responsible for course production and related activities for a portfolio of over 200 public courses and occasional contract courses in engineering and technology and related programs. Responsible for the academic quality of the programs, the development of new courses and curricula (i.e., intensive short courses, professional series and/or certificate programs), and evaluation and oversight of current courses and instructor performance.
Responsible for helping to develop training programs for corporations and other entities (i.e., develop content for the proposal, communicate with selected instructors regarding their contract, logistics, course requirements, etc., communicate with client as needed, and oversee implementation of training sessions).

Supervision, Recruitment, and Orientation:
Supervise staff in the engineering and technology portfolios. Recruit, evaluate, and renew instructors; meet with instructors and advisory groups, as needed, regarding course and program-related issues. Work closely with colleagues and support staff in related program areas at UC Berkeley Extension.

Fiscal Administration:
Responsible for the production of an annual budget, financial management and performance for the portfolio.

Outreach:
Counsel students about the engineering, technology, and other programs in the portfolio. Establish, build, and maintain excellent relations with the campus departments and related professional associations. Collaborate with Extension colleagues to develop new programs, new curricula and marketing strategies. Work with advisory committees of appropriate engineering and technology professionals.

Strategic Planning:
Create a vision for future programmatic directions and work with others to create new and viable programs to meet the needs of changing and dynamic fields. Coordinate and support the strategic planning and vision for related programs in Engineering, Technology, Information Systems & Technical Management, etc.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: The candidate must possess a graduate degree in either Engineering, Information Systems, or Technology or the equivalent; at least three years of recent experience working in engineering, IS, or technology (either in college-level education or in the industry); experience preferred in engineering/ technology education program assessment, development, implementation and management; ability to achieve financial results in a highly competitive self-supporting environment; excellent organizational skills and business skills; excellent oral and written communication skills; excellent management skills; and demonstrated ability to form successful relations with instructors, campus departments, and professional groups.

Desired Qualifications: Familiarity or experience in new product/service development, customer support, engineering, Clean Technology education training or instruction (USGBC/LEED, environmental Sciences, related policy fields); and experience with staff supervision.

Hiring salary is dependent upon qualifications. The position is a non-Senate, annually renewable academic position starting in December 2009.

The Department of Behavioral and Biological Sciences and Mathematics serves over 5,000 students in over 350 programs. Under the general supervision of the Director of Behavioral and Biological Sciences and Mathematics and the direct supervision of the Health Professions Program Director, the Program Coordinator/Adviser for the Post-Baccalaureate Health Professions Program is primarily responsible for advising students in the post-baccalaureate program, coordinating and scheduling laboratory classes, and overseeing outreach to campus departments, medical, dental, and veterinary schools; allied health professional school admissions departments; and professional associations.

Major Responsibilities and Duties

Program Development and Administration:
Working with the program director for sciences and math, responsible for program evaluation, new program development and related activities in the lab-related sciences. Serve as a supervisor for support staff. Work closely with advisory boards, colleagues, and support staff at UNEX. Build and maintain excellent relations with students, campus departments, and related professional associations and healthcare organizations.

Working with the program director for sciences and math, coordinate and schedule all laboratory classes at various sites in the Bay Area. Recruit, orient, evaluate, and renew instructors. Responsible for new lab-related course production in the sciences. Establish new collaborative relationships with local institutions to allow growth in the laboratory science portfolio.

Responsible for the academic quality and related activities of Career Seminar and other advising-related seminars, workshops, and Career Nights.

Establish, build, and maintain excellent relations with students, campus departments, related professional associations, and health care organizations. Work with advisory committees of appropriate science professionals and faculty.

Meet with advisory groups, as needed, regarding student and program-related issues. Work closely with colleagues in related program areas at Extension.

Student Advising:
Recruit, evaluate, and advise students. Screen and counsel students about pre-medical, pre-health, science, and related programs. Communicate on a regular basis with currently enrolled health professions students enrolled in the program. Review portfolios and write letters of recommendation for Post-Baccalaureate Health Professions Program students who are applying for medical and other health professional schools. Compile credentials of applicants and present to the Health Professions Program Director and Program Director of Science and Mathematics for determination of final admissions status. Counsel international students regarding F-1 visa status and interact with the Designated School Official as needed regarding SEVIS reporting. Conduct Career Nights and Information Sessions, as needed. Coordinate and teach, as needed, the Health Careers Seminars I and II. Serve as a work leader for support staff in the portfolio in terms of student advising.

Qualifications

Position Control:
The incumbent is required to interact with students, instructors, department staff, and university staff in a professional manner and with respect to the service-oriented, self-supporting nature of UC Berkeley Extension. In addition, the incumbent is required to perform all job duties in compliance with campus regulations and department deadlines and standards and to adhere to The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) as well as all applicable copyright laws regarding software, media and print materials.

Required:
Master's degree in the biological, health sciences, counseling, or related field. Five to ten years of experience in science higher education. Two to three years of experience counseling and preparing students for medical careers. Organizational skills sufficient to support a program with complex logistical needs, including the coordination and scheduling of laboratory facilities. Demonstrated ability to form successful relations with campus departments, professional associations and related health science departments. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Interpersonal abilities to work well with individuals of diverse backgrounds, interests, and English language proficiency.

Preferred:
Ph.D. in the biological sciences. Experience with administration or teaching in a financially self-supporting environment.
