Data is everywhere—from e-commerce sales, app downloads to a smartphone, to supply chain management or bioinformatics or connected devices. And that massive increase in the amount and variety of data being collected is translating to an exponential growth in the computer power needed to process that data.



Curriculum Requirements

The curriculum comprises one required course, one programming course, one machine learning course and four units of electives for a total of 10 semester units (150 hours of instruction). You must pay a nonrefundable certificate application fee.

All coursework must be completed within three years of registering for the certificate. However, requirements may be updated based on new developments in the field of study; we recommend completing the curriculum in a timely fashion.

How to Register

By registering, you declare your intention to complete the curriculum. To register online for the Certificate Program in Data Science, complete these two steps:

  1. Submit the online registration, and complete your student account if you are a new student.
  2. Pay the nonrefundable registration fee through your shopping cart.

Please allow 3–5 business days for the registration to appear in your student account.

Estimated Cost

Each course is priced individually, and you pay the course fee at the time of enrollment. The certificate has an estimated cost of $5,100 (not including course materials or registration fee). Course fees are subject to change.

Certificate and Award Request

You must take all courses for a letter grade. To receive the certificate, you must maintain an overall minimum 2.5 grade point average (GPA), with a grade of C or better (no C-minus grades) in each course. A Certificate With Distinction will be awarded to those who complete the certificate with a GPA of 4.0 (effective to those who register beginning Jan. 2, 2018). All coursework must be completed within three years of registering for the certificate.

Once you have complete the certificate coursework, notify UC Berkeley Extension that you have completed the curriculum and request your certificate. Send an email to or call (510) 642-4151. After your records have been reviewed, verified and approved, your certificate will be sent to you in the mail. The review of your records is usually completed within six to eight weeks after you request the certificate.
