Construction Cost Estimating

Learn the principles, methods, and tools used to develop accurate construction cost estimates across all phases of a construction project. Building on a foundational understanding of construction project management, the course covers conceptual, parametric, and detailed estimating; quantity takeoffs; labor, material, and equipment pricing; and subcontractor bidding. Emphasis is placed on digital estimating workflows, market conditions, risk and contingency, and professional judgment through applied exercises and real-world project examples. This course is ideal for aspiring estimators, project managers, and construction professionals who need to develop or review project budgets and bids.

Prerequisites: Completion of CIV ENG X400 Introduction to Management in the Construction Industry or equivalent industry experience.

Learner Outcomes

On successful completion, participants will be able to:

  • Differentiate among contemporary construction estimating methods (conceptual, parametric, unit-price) and evaluate their applicability.
  • Assess the relationship between estimating, project planning, and cost control throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Prepare detailed quantity takeoffs and cost estimates using software tools.
  • Analyze and evaluate construction estimates for accuracy, completeness, and risk, including the impacts of market volatility.
  • Communicate cost implications and value engineering principles to project decision-makers.

Drop Deadline: Oct/20/2026 05:59 PM

Refunds are issued to the original account of payment only when a course is dropped in accordance with the deadline above. A $35 processing fee will be applied to all course drops. After the drop deadline, students can withdraw prior to the course completion date. Course fees are non-refundable for withdrawals, and a “W” will be applied to your student record for all withdrawal requests. If you are unable to complete your coursework and do not officially withdraw from the course before the completion date, you may receive a failing grade (F).

Students will receive access to the course in Canvas on the course start date. Zoom meeting information will be emailed to enrolled students before the first class meeting and posted to the announcements page in Canvas.

Instructional Types

Live Online
Live Online courses provide an interactive learning experience with scheduled synchronous online sessions held via Zoom video conferencing (Pacific Time). Learn more about the Live Online format.
Online, Start Anytime
Continuous enrollment course begins when you enroll. You have a minimum of 90 days and a maximum of 180 days to complete the course.
Online, Fixed Date
Enroll in this course by its start date and complete it by its specified end date. There are no live sessions, but plenty of opportunities to collaborate with your classmates and instructor.
Classroom
Take classes in-person at one of our buildings or partner locations.

All of our courses are taught in English. If English is not your first language, please use the following test scores as guides in order to be successful:

  • TOEFL: 90
  • IELTS Academic Format: 7
  • DAAD: C1
  • TEM-4 or TEM-8: Level 70
  • Duolingo: 125
