Differentiating Between Normal Grief and Major Depression

In this workshop, you learn how to distinguish between normal grief symptoms and Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). You review the normal grief process, identify levels of bereavement risk, review contemporary grief models and criteria for MDD as defined by the American Psychiatric Association and outlined in the most recent Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM 5). Learn about the Bereavement Exclusion in previous editions of the DSM and changes in the latest version that reflect a shift in assessment and diagnostic classification. 

Learner Outcomes

By the end of this course, the you should be able to:

  1. Identify emotional and physical symptoms of grief
  2. Assess an individual’s level of bereavement risk
  3. Distinguish between normal grief and MDD as defined in the DSM-5
  4. Understand the purpose of the Bereavement Exclusion and its omission in the DSM-5
  5. Understand the APA’s rationale for this change
  6. Understand the benefits and risks of pathologizing the bereavement process
  7. Refine your assessment techniques to better differentiate and treat grief and MDD
